Your first visit

Good communication between you and your plastic surgeon is essential when planning your treatment. At your first visit, you will be asked to explain in detail what concerns you and how you hope to look and feel after treatment. It is important to set aside any awkwardness you may feel and speak honestly about your concerns and the type of result you hope for.

Mr Dunkin will assess your general health, examine the area of concern and explain which surgical or non-surgical treatments will best achieve your goals. You will discuss the treatment options, the type of anaesthetic (asleep or awake), length of hospital stay, follow-up care and the potential risks and complications detail. Above all, it is important to have realistic expectations about your surgery.

After your surgery

The days and weeks following your surgery are important to getting the best result. It is important that you follow the advice we give you. This includes, for example, taking adequate time off work, wearing dressings or compression garments, getting enough rest, staying out of the sun and avoiding smoking. Finally it is important to have someone to help you after surgery.

What types of treatment do men ask for?

  • Nose reshaping (rhinoplasty) can improve the size and shape of your nose.
  • Setting back prominent ears to make them stick out less.
  • Necklift and liposuction. A fatty or "jowly" area beneath the chin is often a concern for men. Liposuction may be sufficient to correct the problem in younger patients. Older men may require removal of excess skin and tightening the platysma muscles (facelift, necklift and plastysmaplasty) and liposuction, to get the best result.
  • Facelift improves a number of areas in the face, in particular loose sagging cheeks and jowls. This can be combined with necklift and liposuction to rejuvenate the whole face and neck.
  • Blepharoplasty and brow lift can be used to improve ‘saggy’ upper eyelids, bags under your eyes and lift the eyebrows out of the eyes to make you appear less tired and angry.
  • Breast reduction for gynaecomastia (“man boobs” or “moobs”) uses liposuction, surgery or both to give you a flatter chest.
  • Body contouring and abdominoplasty - men are increasingly asking for surgery to improve the size and shape of their abdomen by removing excess fat and skin with liposuction, surgery or both.

What about the risks?

There is no such thing as risk-free surgery and male surgery is no different. For example, in general, male facial skin has a greater blood supply than in women so bleeding and haematoma (a temporary collection of blood under the skin) is seen more often in men.

We will spend time talking through the potential risks and complications of the treatment you choose so you can make the right deision for you.
