"I don't like my ears"

People are concerned with their ears for a number of reasons. Most commonly this is because they stick out. This is due to one or more of the following features: incomplete folding of the antehelical fold, a deep conchal fossa (bowl) or a conchal fossa that sticks out. This may affect the whole ear or just one part. Other common problems include a difference between sides or pointed ears.

Am I a good candidate for ear correction?

You may benefit from ear correction if your ears stick out, are pointed or there is a difference between sides.

What are the benefits of ear correction?

Ear correction aims to improve the shape and appearance of the ears.

What does ear correction involve?

Ear correction is an operation that can be done with you awake (local anaesthetic) or asleep (general anaesthetic). It involves making an incision behind the ear, reshaping the cartilage (with stitches, by 'scoring' the cartilage or both) and repositioning the ear. Sometimes the cartilage is reduced. The wound is closed with stitches and dressing and a head bandage are applied. You may go home the same day or stay overnight.

What happens after my ear correction?

We will see you ten days after your ear correction to remove the bandage and any stitches. Now you can wash your hair & keep the grooves behind the ears clean and moisturised. Swelling and bruising are common and gradually settles down. Numbness is also common and tends to improve with time. You should wear a headband in bed at night for six weeks. You may return to normal activities when the wound is healed but probably avoid contact sports for six weeks. We will see you in clinic to review your progress. If you have any concerns after your operation you should contact the Nuffield and we will see you.

What are the downsides to ear correction?

There is no such thing as risk-free surgery and ear correction is no different. There is a small risk of bleeding, infection, slow healing, skin loss, cartilage loss, poor scars (rarely hypertrophic or keloid), under-correction, over-correction, asymmetry and recurrence of deformity. 'The published reparation rate after ear correction is 10% and you should be aware that revision may be required.'

Are there any alternatives to ear correction?

Ear cartilage can be moulded with splints in the first few months of life but unfortunately not after that age.
