What is rhinoplasty (nose job)?

The nose is an important central feature of the face. Many people are self-conscious about the size and shape of their nose and feel that it is too large, has a big hump or is crooked. Sometimes this stems from an accident when the nose was injured or is a 'family feature'. Rhinoplasty (or nose job) is an operation that improves the size and shape of your nose.

Am I a good candidate for rhinoplasty?

You may benefit from rhinoplasty if you are unhappy with the size and shape of your nose.

What could rhinoplasty do for you?

Improve the size and shape of your nose.

Increase your self-confidence and self-esteem.
Rhinoplasty can also improve your breathing.

Rhinoplasty is designed to improve the size and shape of your nose, for example making a big nose smaller or improving the size and shape of the tip of your nose or straightening a crooked nose. A blocked nose may be improved in rhinoplasty by removing part of the nose's dividing wall or nasal septum (septoplasty).

What does rhinoplasty involve?

Rhinoplasty is an operation done with you asleep and takes a couple of hours. It involves changing the shape of the underlying bone and cartilage framework and allowing the overlying skin to redrape. This can usually be done via cuts on the inside of the nose so there are no visible scars (closed rhinoplasty). Work may be needed to improve the tip of the nose and if so, a cut may be required in the skin leaving a small external scar (open rhinoplasty). A blocked nose may be improved at the same time as rhinoplasty by removing part of the nose's dividing wall or nasal septum (septoplasty).

What happens after my rhinoplasty?

When you wake after surgery you will have a drip and pain relief. Skin is closed with dissolving or removable stitches. A small splint is placed to protect your nose and nasal packs are used if needed. Most people go home the next morning but same day discharge is available. 'External stitches (if needed) are removed on day 5.'

What are the downsides to rhinoplasty?

There is no such thing as risk-free surgery and rhinoplasty is no different. In closed rhinoplasty scars are hidden in the nostrils and usually settle well. In open tip rhinoplasty the external 'scar'.

How can I reduce my risks?

Smokers have a significantly greater risk of complications. Even stopping around the time of surgery can help. Stop Aspirin and similar drugs two weeks before surgery as these can make you bleed more.
