What is blepharioplasty?

Blepharoplasty is an operation that removes excess skin and fat from your eyelids giving your eyes a brighter, more open look.

Am I a good candidate for blepharioplasty?

You would benefit from blepharoplasty if you have loose skin or excess fat in your eyelids, particularly if this obscures your vision. 'Loose skin, eye bags and wrinkles in the lower eyelid are treated with lower blepharoplasty.

What are the benefits of blepharioplasty?

Blepharoplasty gives your eyes a brighter, more open look and can improve your vision.

What does blepharioplasty involve?

  • Blepharoplasty addresses two problems in the eyelids – excess skin and bulging fat. Excess skin is removed via a cut in a skin crease in the upper eyelid. In the past most surgeons then removed the bulging fat but this can leave a 'hollow-eyes' look. We prefer to redistribute the fat, avoiding the 'hollow-eyes' result. Upper blepharoplasty takes 30-60 minutes and can be done with you awake (local anaesthesia) or asleep (general anaesthetic). Some people have heavy eyebrows that make overhanging upper eyelid skin worse. If this is the case then you may need a brow lift to get the best result.
  • Lower blepharoplasty involves making a cut in a skin crease just below your eyelashes and again addressing bulging fat and excess skin. Your cheek can be lifted at the same time (mid-face lift) to give a fresher, more youthful result. Some people may benefit from fat transfer to improve deep or dark lines or hollow eyes from previous surgery.

What happens after my blepharoplasty?

You can go home straight away after upper blepharoplasty under local anaesthetic. After general anaesthetic, most patients go home the following day but same-day discharge is available. We will see you a week later to remove your stitches and 'in the clinic for review'.

Can you get rid of the bags under my eyes?

Bags under the eyes are difficult to correct completely. Fat transfer (lipofilling) is a technique we combine with blepharoplasty to improve this area.

What are the downsides to blepharioplasty

There is no such thing as risk-free surgery and blepharoplasty is no different. There is a small risk of bleeding, wound infection, slow healing, poor scars, undercorrection, overcorrection, incomplete closure, ptosis (droop), loss of lashes and dry eyes. Finally, any procedure around the eyes can result in blindness. This is extremely rare (about 1:250000 risk) and is heralded by severe pain and problems with your vision. We will talk to you about these in detail. If you have any concerns after your operation you should telephone the Nuffield and we will see you.

Are there any alternatives to blepharioplasty

Many people who ask about blepharoplasty really need a brow lift. Botulinum toxin (Botox) is good for treating creases around the eyes and forehead. LASER resurfacing is used for fine creases on the lower eyelids. Lipofilling (fat transfer) is used to fill out creases and grooves in the lower eyelid area.
